Is music the best therapy…?

MUSIC can be defined as a series of sounds that are organized in a certain manner, simply employing some combination of melody, rhythm, tempo amongst others in the sense of conveying mood.

Music in most cases, is used as a refresher tool in a person’s life especially as an entertainment object to soothe their mood in everyday life. Music comes in different genres such as Hip-Hop, RnB, Rock, Reggae, Gospel, Dancehall amongst others.

Having moved around several places, music is considered as a tool of healing and sometimes as a booster, in the sense that it can be the best therapy to the challenges of life. To come up with tangible and solid evidence that music is the best therapy, the writer has conducted a question and answer session with several individuals in the community, where he learned how global and therapeutic music can be.

Anotidaishe Samaneka said, “There are many things that make music a powerful tool for therapy. The main reason why music is a therapy to me is that it triggers an emotional response in me in the sense that when I hear a song, it brings back memories or evokes certain feelings. In addition, music can be a way to express myself when words are not enough, so when I sing along to a certain song, I can release emotions that I might not be able to put into words”.

Nothando Msipa also gave her positive response about music being a therapy, “Music gives a perfect impression by boosting or improving mood. Whenever I feel stressed and bored, music is my best therapy without considering the genre, so long it has that pitch of rhythm that get you carried away in a relaxation mood. So by this way, music contributes in soothing emotions". Music itself is not only used to the therapy for mood only but also as a background effect at certain places in order for relaxation and refreshing tool. Tinashe Magwaza stated , "Music to me is a form of background effect in my shop. Most of the time i am always in the shop alone, so to ease the quitness inside the shop, music is the tool i use to attract clients".

Conversely, some of the individuals have controversially gone against the fact of music being the best therapy. Some find it as noise and irritating.

This publication spoke to Canisius Zharare who said, "At first i used to like music as a mood booster but later on i came to realize that being home is only the best therapy one would needs. Resting and relaxing at home in a silent room is the best feeling where you will be all alone with your thoughts, by that you will come up with positive results of your decisions".

Tinotenda Mhepo said that, "as a person you do not need music always as a therapy, but sometimes you need friends and family whom you my share your problems with. Having a conversation with people you will end up in a jovial mood and on the other hand, you can also get advice that will benefit you".

In a nutshell , music is not the best therapy to navigate through the rocky labdscape of life as there are some alternatives that can be implemented in attaining a calming mood and reducing stress . These include sport, interactions with family and friends as well tapping into your spirituality.
