Man jailed 10 years for stealing Telone copper cables
Theft of Telone cables which attracts a 10 year jail term

Simbarashe Butawu was [31] was brought before the Harare Magistrates Court facing a charge of contraveing the Postal and Telecommunications Act. According to National Procsecuting Authority of Zimbabwe the state proved that on 15 July 2024 at around 09;00 hours the accused person went opposite number 14 along Wenlock Road in Hatfield where he accessed a Telone manhole with the intention of cutting amid stealing 50 Telone underground cables . He used a hacksaw to cut the cables which supply telecommunications to Hatfield Extension community and he was spotted and apprehended by the informant as he tried to flee the from the scene . He was handed over to the police and the total value of damaged cables is USD200. The National Procecuting Authority of Zimbabwe would like to warn members of the public that theft or vandalism of Telone drop wires attracts a mandatory sentence of 10 years imprisoment.
