Fidelis Mhashu : The Beauty of Servant Leadership
In this season a lot of people have started writing books and I have just finished writing a few of my own, with intriguing titles . There are a lot of difficulties associated with book publishing and I found it is easier to self-publish an e-book on Amazon.
One of the stories I wrote 6 years ago I believe is still relevant in African and Zimbabwean politics is the book, Fidelis Mhashu : The Beauty of Servant Leadership.
There are not so many stories written about Zimbabwean political figures especially veteran opposition leaders that started the fight and struggle against ZANU PF. It is rare to find a story written about Zimbabwean oppsition figures since most of the people who participate in politics do not write books on politics with the exception of former Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe Professor Arthur Mutambara of course. Most of the modern history of politicians is undocumented. Hence, I found it prudent to pen down a biography about Fidelis Mhashu.
I grew up knowing Fidelis Mhashu as a community leader and Member of Parliament. He represented Chitungwiza North Constituency. His leadership qualities drew large crows at his home during the formation of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
The biography book on Fidelis Mhashu tells his story from his early childhood days in Mhondoro-Mubaira near Chegutu where he grew up with his parents and other siblings. His father Sebastian Mhashu was a teacher and a local religious leader.
Fidelis Mhashu was first involved in active politics at the age of 18 when he was at Kutama High School in Zvimba. He was expelled from the school and reinstated but his active politics days had truly begun.
Fidelis went on to train as a teacher and became a professional educator in the 1970s. It was a time when Zimbabweans were fighting in the armed struggle and Mr Mhashu started recruiting young boys and girls to join the war. In 1976 , the Rhodesian forces heard of Mhashu's activities against white imperialists and the search for him began. Fortunately he was smuggled out of the country by Father Dove to the United Kingdom to seek asylum.
Fidelis Mhashu while in the UK decided to further his education and attained a Diploma in Political Science. He went on to create ZANU structures in the United Kingdom and was in the crowd lining to the Lancaster House Conference that negotiated independence for Zimbabwe from Rhodesia.
Fidelis was expelled from ZANU PF and ran as an independent candidate in 1996. His story continues when Mhashu joined Morgan Tsvangirai from the labour movement to form the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Much of the information is detailed in the book on Amazon. It is a biography worth reading to learn about how opposition politics started in Zimbabwe. The story is unique and shows true servant-leadership and determination. The book is expressed as a testament to the history of nationalist and oppostion politics in Zimbabwe.
Fidelis Mhashu is one of the unsung national heroes in Zimbabwe. His contribution did not go unnoticed and his name continues to called among brave men that fought against the dictatorship of Robert Mugabe.
The book is readily available on Amazon and to purchase just open an account with Amazon. The book is available for USD10.00.
