Beitbridge FC seek a short in the arm as 2025 season beckons
The border town of Beitbridge was once a hype of PSL football activity. The days of Border Strikers, a Beitbridge based football club that participated in the elite league in 2016 revealed how football can be a community changing element and a binding factor within the Beitbridge community.
Community based side Beitbridge Fc that also falls under community funding dreams of bringing back the same football hay days.
Beitbridge Fc, just like other community based teams was formed after the unification of Rank FC and Mangava FC, two teams that participated well in the ZIFA Matebeland South Pool B league.
2024 saw the club take part in the Central Region division one league but due to lack of sound sponsorship the club fell into disband.
Beitbridge FC Secretary General Tonderai Nyamadzawo rallied behind the notion that Beitbridge is sated with football talent but cried on the lack of sponsorship, a cancer that has downplayed hopes of ever watching PSL football in the border town.
‘Beitbridge has talent and what we have seen and confirmed is that football is an important tool to the community. The biggest challenge that has been affecting the progress of football in Beitbridge is poor funding or lack thereof. Beitbridge FC fans and supporters used to affiliate from their pockets so that the club gets some money. We used to sell food and beverages during match days as a way to get something but it was not enough.’
Nyamadzawo said even though Beitbridge still lacks behind in terms of football infrastructure and facilities sponsoring Beitbridge FC will bring benefits not only to the club but to the financial source as well.
‘Lack of infrastructure, resources, and structured development programs have curbed football development in Beitbridge. It has been proven in the past that sponsoring teams in Beitbridge brings so much in terms of brand visibility. While talent is nurtured the sponsor will enjoy community loyalty because supporters respect football up lifters. It’s a border town and there is so much going on in Beitbridge.’
Beitbridge fc fared well in their first division one season and the initial mandate was to avoid relegation. The executive board had to release a lot of players to even out available resources.
They played 32 games in the just ended 2024 Central region division one soccer league season, won 8, drew 8 and lost 15 (1 walk over vs Shabanie Mine FC).
Under such financial constraints Beitbridge FC managed loan young striker Blessed Tembo to Triangle FC, a young lad who went on to help the Chiredzi based side gain promotion back in the PSL foil. Tembo had scored 6 goals for Beitbridge FC.
Beitbridge is no stranger to producing notable talent. Yesteryear’s have witnessed the likes of Felix Chidungwe, The late Ali Kazembe, Maxwell Nyamupanedengu, Godfrey Mukambi, Alec Marime just to mention but a few.
