A dive into green governance and renewable energy sources
Hilton Chingosho, coordinator in Faculty of Engineering at University of Zimbabwe (UZ), recently delivered an insightful presentation on the Just Energy Transition in Zimbabwe.
The event took place at the (GGZT) Green Governance Zimbabwe Trust's first inaugural Just Energy Transition learning workshop for journalists on July 18, 2024.
The concept of ‘Just Energy Transition’ revolves around a gradual shift in energy usage that ensures no one is left behind and society is not negatively impacted.
Chingosho emphasized the importance of embracing this transition, emphasizing that no individual should be left behind during this trans-formative process.
Major highlights at the event was the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and the development of innovative technologies like energy storage and hydrogen. These processes, known as de-carbonization and digitization, are integral to driving the energy transition.
It is essential to note that the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable's is a gradual and ongoing process.
One major hurdle is the substantial financial investment required, such as the cost of acquiring a solar system. The shift towards renewable energy sources can result in job losses in the fossil fuel industry.
However, Chingosho emphasized that this transition presents opportunities for skill utilization and digitization, which can mitigate the risk of job losses.
He outlined a comprehensive transition plan that includes collaboration beyond national borders, partnering with anchor institutions, promoting equality, preparing for the future, and reducing emissions.
To successfully implement this transition, Chingosho stressed the importance of capacity building through education and training, as well as market development.
The Green Governance Zimbabwe Trust, a non-governmental organization operating in Zimbabwe, is dedicated to promoting sustainable environmental management. Their primary focus is advancing citizen inclusion and participation in natural resources management and environmental governance.
They also serve as a vital hub for information, providing a platform for debate and discussion among communities, policymakers, and other stakeholders on environmental issues.
Chingosho's presentation at the GGZT's workshop shed light on the significance of the Just Energy Transition in Zimbabwe and emphasized the importance of collective efforts in achieving a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
